Description

Red Russian Kale
Brassica Oleacea

A classic purple kale with beautiful pink veins and flat leaves.

Culture: Directly sow seeds into the garden in spring or late summer for a fall crop. Thin to 1 foot apart or leave closer for smaller leaves.

Seed saving: Kale is a biennial and crosses easily with other brassicas. My technique is to alternate the olearaca varieties I want to save. Growing green kale one year; red kale the next. Protect plants over winter with straw or agribon and let go to seed the following growing season. Let pods dry on the plant and cut stems into bags before the pods pop open. Gently stomp on the pods and winnow with screens to remove chaff from the seed.
